Everything you need to feel confident, calm, and camera-ready
Whether it’s your first dance photoshoot or you’re a seasoned pro, whether you are working with me or another photographer, preparing for your session can make all the difference—not just in how your images turn out, but in how you feel during the experience. Having been at this for well over a decade, I’ve gathered some tried-and-true tips to help you feel prepared, comfortable, and fully present when it’s time to step in front of the lens.

The Night Before: Set Yourself Up for Success
- Get everything packed and ready: Outfit(s), tights, accessories, warm-ups, water, snacks, any props or special shoes you plan to use. The more you prep ahead of time, the more peaceful your morning will be.
- Lay out your wardrobe: Include backups in case something doesn’t feel quite right on the day-of. Make sure outfits are wrinkle-free, clean, and fit well. If you're unsure, bring options—I’m always happy to help you choose.
- Hydrate and rest: Photoshoot energy hits differently when you're well-rested and nourished. Aim to drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep.
- Avoid anything new: Stick to products, foods, and routines you know work for you to prevent surprise breakouts, stomach issues, or other stressors. Same thing applies to hair - don't get a haircut right before (you might regret it).
Skin & Hair Tips
- Keep it simple and clean: Skin that’s hydrated and lightly prepped photographs beautifully. You don’t need heavy makeup unless we’ve discussed a specific look. A little mascara and a soft lip or cheek tint go a long way.
- Avoid glitter or overly dewy products: Studio lighting reflects off shiny or sparkly surfaces, which can distract from your movement and expression.
- Hair matters, but don’t overdo it: Whether it’s a sleek bun, loose waves, or your natural texture, choose a style that makes you feel like you. Bring a few basic hair tools and products for touch-ups (brush, spray, bobby pins, ties, etc.).
What to Bring to the Studio/Location
- Your dancewear and any backup outfits
- Dance shoes (clean and in good condition)
- Snacks and water
- Hair kit and basic makeup for touch-ups
- A mirror (if we are on location)
- Inspo screenshots or pose ideas if you have them (we'll chat about this more in a minute)
- A positive mindset—we’ll do the rest together!
Prep Some Poses
- Snag those screenshots: inspiration is always a plus!
- PRACTICE: A particular pose might look great on your phone - but your ability to hit that pose matters.
- Don't go big, go right: A beautifully straight extension at 45 degrees is far more aesthetic than a sloppy one at 90 (and you want that too)
- Play to your strengths: Every dancer is different - some are more flexible, some are stronger, some are more artsy - when thinking about poses, play to your strengths.
- Don't stress: While having some poses "ready" is helpful, your photographer should be able to walk you through plenty of options.
Your Mindset Matters
This session is about you—your artistry, your strength, your movement, and your story. It’s totally normal to feel a little nervous, especially if you’re not used to being photographed. Just know that my job is to help you feel confident, empowered, and beautifully seen.
A few reminders before you arrive:
- You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to show up.
- If something doesn’t feel good, we’ll try something else.
- Your voice matters—pose ideas, music choices, and creative input are always welcome.
- We’ll laugh, we’ll dance, and you’ll leave feeling proud of yourself.
A Note About MY Style
Hey, it's my blog....so why not opine a moment...LOL. I know this might sound like one of those "inspirational quotes", but my goal has never been just to take pretty photos—it’s to create a safe and creative space where you feel seen, celebrated, and powerful in your own skin. I want you to see, through my lens, your magnificence. Whether you're capturing a milestone, building a portfolio, or just wanting to freeze this moment in your dance journey, I’m want to help you shine and show you what you are capable of!
A Final Thought
Showing up prepared helps you walk into your session with confidence, clarity, and calm. Trust your training, trust your body, and trust the creative process. You’ve already done the hard work—now it's time to capture the magic ---- but not before you STRETCH!
